Milieudefensie: 'Climate case against bank of the climate crisis ING continues'
After last Tuesday's ruling in the appeal against Shell, Milieudefensie announces that it will continue with its second Climate case. The court case will be against the largest bank in the Netherlands: ING.
Milieudefensie director Donald Pols: "There can be no doubt about it: ING, as the most polluting bank in the Netherlands, is exacerbating dangerous climate change. We have looked closely at the court ruling and we see in it a solid basis to demand better climate policiesy from ING. Therefore, together with our tens of thousands of co-plaintiffs, we will continue our case to hold the banker of the climate crisis accountable.”
In the ruling against Shell, the judge concluded that all large polluting companies must reduce their emissions, and that starting new oil and gas fields clashes with the Paris Climate Agreement. ING says it emits as much as one and a half times the Netherlands, and finances oil and gas companies worth nearly 30 billion euros, many of which still start new projects. ING's current climate targets do not guarantee a reduction in the bank’s emissions. Milieudefensie announced the Climate case against ING in January of this year.
